Delta to fastest manual

PRO

How much you gain or lose against the best lap of the fastest driver in your class, live through the whole lap. A PRO plan overlay of Raptor Racing Overlay.

The Delta to fastest compares your lap, point by point, with the best lap of the fastest driver in your class. The big number in the middle is the difference: with a minus sign you're faster than them at that point of the track, with a plus sign you're slower. On the left is that driver, with their flag, car make and best lap; on the right is you. You can also compare against your own best lap or optimal lap, from this session or all-time.

iRacing doesn't provide this number: its deltas are always against your own laps. So the overlay watches every car in your class as it goes around and records its lap. It only reads data from the game: it never changes anything in iRacing or in your car.

Delta to fastest manual 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Example with two made-up drivers: at this point of the lap you're 0.234 s faster than Lucas Moretti's best lap.

  1. 1Flag and car: the country of the driver you're compared with and their car make (yours if you compare against your best lap or your optimal lap).
  2. 2The fastest: the driver with the best lap in your class in this session, or the one you picked in Compare with. If you compare against yourself, it says My best lap, My optimal lap, All-time best or All-time optimal here.
  3. 3Their best lap: purple when it's the fastest lap in the class. If you picked a driver who isn't the fastest, it's white. With My optimal lap, it's the time of your optimal lap, in white.
  4. 4The delta: your time so far this lap minus theirs at that same point of their best lap. White near zero, turning green if you're faster or red if you're slower.
  5. 5Your best lap: yours in this session.
  6. 6You: your name and, further right, your car make and flag. If you're the fastest, both sides show your name and you're compared with your own best lap.
  7. 7The sector strip: under the delta, one cell per sector: green if you beat him in that sector, red if you lost time, and the current sector highlighted.

The three delta screens

The capsule is always the same, with the fastest driver on the left and you on the right: what changes is the number in the middle and its color, which fills in gradually with the gap. These are the three situations, at different points of the same lap against the same driver.

Slower, in red
Slower, in redWith a plus sign, you're slower than their best lap at this point of the track: the number is the time you've lost to them since the line. The number and the edge of the capsule turn red gradually: a tenth is already visible, and at half a second it's full red.
Level, in white
Level, in whiteNear zero you're level with them and the number stays white. The color changes smoothly: when you go from losing to gaining it doesn't jump straight from red to green, it passes through white. On the left, their best lap is purple because it's the fastest in the class.
Faster, in green
Faster, in greenWith a minus sign you're gaining on them: the number, which is the time you're ahead, and the edge of the capsule turn green, on the same scale as the red. If you finish the lap in green and iRacing counts it as your best lap, you become the fastest in the class and from then on you compare against your own best lap.

How the fastest lap is recorded

iRacing gives each car's position and best time, but not how that lap went. The overlay records it by watching, about thirty times per second, and uses it when its time matches the one iRacing publishes.

  • A lap only counts if it started by crossing the line on track and the overlay saw all of it.
  • Pit out laps, laps with a pit stop, tows and resets don't count, even when the reset leaves you past the line.
  • Each session has its own fastest driver: when a new session starts (practice to qualifying, qualifying to race) the recording starts from zero. If you rewind a replay or look at another session in it, nothing recorded is lost: when you come back, the delta recovers by itself from the next line crossing.

Who you're compared with

By default, the fastest driver in your class: the best lap in this session, even if that driver already went to the garage or disconnected. Never a driver from another class. If someone sets a faster lap, the reference switches to theirs right away. The number in the middle stays in place: only the left side changes.

With right-click, Compare with, you can pick another driver in your class. The list shows first those who already have a lap, from fastest to slowest, with their best time. Automatic (the fastest) goes back to the default.

  • Your choice is kept from one session to the next. In a team race it's tied to the car, so it stays the same after every driver swap.
  • If the chosen driver isn't in the session, the menu says The chosen driver is not in this session and, meanwhile, you're compared with the fastest.
  • If the chosen driver has no lap yet, their name shows on the left but the delta stays as a dash.

Against your own laps

In the menu, WHAT SHOWS tab, WHAT IT COMPARES AGAINST has five options. Your four are also at the bottom of Compare with, on right-click.

With one of your laps, the left side shows your flag, your car and that time, and the delta and the sectors are measured against it. When you go back to The fastest, the driver you had picked comes back.

The fastest
Default. The best lap of the fastest driver in your class, or of the driver you picked in Compare with.
My best lap
Your best lap of this session, even if you set it before opening the overlay.
My optimal lap
The sum of your best sectors of this session. Its time shows once the overlay has seen you complete each sector.
My all-time best lap
Your record with that car on that track, kept from one session to the next. Only clean laps count: complete, without pit stops or incidents. On the left it says All-time best.
My all-time optimal lap
Your all-time best sectors with that car on that track. On the left it says All-time optimal.

With no record yet, it compares with this session's and the left side says No record yet.

To start over: right-click, Compare with, Reset my records for this track and car. To delete them all: DELETE ALL MY RECORDS, in the settings. Restoring the factory settings doesn't delete them.

ESTIMATED and the dash

ESTIMATED
If the fastest driver set their best lap before the overlay saw all of it, their time is known but not how it was spread around the track. It's estimated with the shape of another lap and the number gets smaller, with ESTIMATED under it. It goes away when the overlay sees a whole best lap of theirs.
-.---
No comparison: you're in the pits, on the out lap, on a lap with a tow or a pit stop, on the lap you had already started when you opened the overlay, you've been stopped on track for more than 10 seconds, or there's nothing to compare with yet. The number comes back when you cross the line on a valid lap.

The colors

The number always shows the exact value, in thousandths (with a gap of 10 seconds or more it switches to hundredths). The color, on the other hand, changes smoothly so that a jump from green to red doesn't flash at you mid-corner.

White
The delta is near zero: you're level with the reference.
Green
You're faster. The color fills in gradually: a tenth is already visible, and at half a second it's full green.
Red
You're slower, on the same scale.
Purple
The time of the fastest lap in your class.
Gray
The dash, when there's no comparison.

The sectors

They're on by default; turn them off with Show the sectors. Under the delta there's one cell for each sector of the track (S1, S2, S3...), the same sectors iRacing uses for its split times.

When you finish a sector, its cell turns green if it was faster than the same sector of the reference lap, or red if it was slower, with the difference in hundredths. A finished sector doesn't change anymore. The sector you're driving looks a bit lighter than the ones still to come. When you cross the line, the full strip stays for 3 seconds so you can see the last sector.

  • They're always compared against the same reference as the delta, also when it says ESTIMATED.
  • On a lap with a pit stop or a tow, the remaining sectors stay as a dash.
  • If iRacing doesn't report the track's sectors, the strip doesn't show.

Where it shows

The first time, it appears centered at the top, just under iRacing's virtual mirror. It only shows while you drive: in the garage and in replays it hides, unless you tick Also show it in the garage or Also show it in replays and when spectating. When watching a replay or spectating a race, "you" is the car the camera follows.

When you place it without a session running, it shows The fastest (or the lap of yours you chose) and Your lap as a sample.

It can also be seen on your phone or tablet, with the WIFI CONNECTION button in the menu, and as a STREAMING page for OBS: the same capsule, with the same number and the same color.

Controls and settings

  • On the overlay: with Allow moving the overlay on, you drag it with the mouse wherever you want. When you arrange the overlays from the menu, you can also resize it by dragging a corner.
  • Right-click on the overlay: Names (First and last name, Initial and last name or First name and last initial), Compare with (the drivers in your class, your four laps and Reset my records for this track and car), Show the best laps, Show the sectors, Overlay size (Bigger, Smaller or 75% to 200%), Also show it in the garage, Also show it in replays and when spectating, Allow moving the overlay, Background opacity (a small window with two sliders: background and data) and Close the delta to fastest.
  • In the Raptor Racing Overlay menu, the Delta to fastest settings have two tabs: WHAT SHOWS (what it compares against, DELETE ALL MY RECORDS, how names are written, the best laps, the sectors and how it's calculated) and LOOKS (size, background opacity, data opacity, moving by dragging, where it shows and seeing it on your phone). The background is the two strips behind the names; the data is everything else. The driver to compare with is only picked with right-click, because the list comes from the current session.

Tips

  1. Open the overlay before going out on track: it can only record the laps it sees. If the fastest driver set their lap earlier, you'll see ESTIMATED until they improve.
  2. Drive a couple of clean laps: with laps recorded, the estimate follows the real shape of the track instead of an even split.
  3. Watch the color more than the digits: the green or red filling in tells you at a glance whether you're closing in or dropping back.
  4. Watch the sectors to see where on the track you gain or lose time.
  5. With My optimal lap you see how much is left to put your best sectors together in a single lap.
  6. Use Compare with to measure yourself against a rival with your pace or a teammate, instead of the fastest.
